This week’s topic is easy: what books have we read so far this year. I’ve read quite a few, but I’m going to post only my favorites.

Has anyone else read any of these this year? I absolutely adored The Selection trilogy and really need to write my reviews for those. What has everyone else read?

Top Ten Tuesday – Goals for 2014

toptentuesdayTop Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week, they will post a new Top Ten list that one of their bloggers at The Broke and the Bookish will answer. Anyone can join!

This week’s top ten list is about our Top Ten Goals/Resolutions For 2014 (these can be bookish, not bookish or a blend). Since I already made a post with my bookish goals, my focus is just on every day life goals.

  1. Let go of the things I cannot change. This goes for pretty much everything in my life, especially when it comes to work. Often I am faced with situations that are beyond my control, as I cannot get inside the minds of others in order to do so. Usually it makes me mad to the point of ranting about it. However, I am turning over a new leaf. Instead of getting mad (on the outside), I’m going to smile, nod, be cordial…and then briefly rant about it later, but then let it go.
  2. Work out again. So cliché, I know, but it’s something that is necessary. When I was in high school and college, I worked out a lot and lost a ton of weight (about 50 lbs to be exact). However, when I started student teaching, I lost the energy to continue to work out, as well as the time (or so I thought). I’ve barely worked out since then and that was about 2 years ago now. I need to start working out again, even if it’s only for 30 minutes on the elliptical (which is what I used to do).
  3. Focus more on reading and not wasting time. I tend to waste time through various activities, like mindlessly watching TV that I don’t really have a vested interest in, or browsing through Tumblr and Pinterest for hours and hours. My hope this year is to spend less time doing those things (though I could never give up Pinterest and Tumblr) and more time reading when I have a free moment.
  4. Save money. I’m already not off to a great start on this, as I’m currently planning so many trips I want to make this year (weekend getaways, BEA, ALA conference, etc.), so there goes some money. But aside from those things (though they are rather major expenses), I do plan to spend less on material items (except books) this year. We’ll see how well that one goes.
  5. Don’t let my anger get the best of me. As I mentioned in #1, I have a bit of a temper and sometimes act/speak before I think, especially if I’m mad. This year, my hope is to try and remain calm, cool, and collected instead of blowing my top on something that is usually beyond my control.
  6. Participate more in professional development. I’m going to consider BEA and the ALA conference as professional development, even though they are fun events. Pinterest can also be professional development too…right?
  7. Smile, even if I feel like crying or screaming. Again, no getting mad right away, but instead do my best to smile in any situation. No one outside my close circle of trust needs to see me be mad or upset…deep breaths.
  8. Enjoy my job. I’m a high school librarian. This is what I’ve been working for all through undergraduate and now graduate school. This is what I want to do. However, it isn’t exactly as I pictured it to be. But that doesn’t mean I can’t still love it. Instead of complaining about the negative aspects of it, I intend to build up the positive aspects of it. I think I can manage that.
  9. Learn to say no. “Can you do this for me?” “But I need this now!” I pretty much hear those two things on a regular basis at work (from faculty members) and for the life of me, I’ve had a hard time saying no to people. Perhaps it’s because I’m a new teacher and feel I should cave, but no longer will I have a weak backbone. I will stand up for myself. I will not be treated as anything less than a teacher (I have my secondary teaching license for English). I will do my job and will assist others WHEN I CAN. I will not do busy work for others, just because some people think I may do less work than them. No more. I am librarian, hear me roar!
  10. Stop procrastinating. Maybe tomorrow.

What are some goals/resolutions the rest of you have? I always like hearing about what others strive to do!
